Middle School Tips 3 From Joseph Fagan, an eighth grade science teacher at Sahuarita Middle School in Sahuarita, Arizona: ìI accept make-up work from students outside class time. I give my students three scheduled times each week for peer and teacher help; a one- or two-hour after school session (sometimes shared with the eighth grade math teacher) and two days during lunch ("Brown-Bag" sessions). During those times students may turn in late work, get help on assignments, re-do poor assignments, etc. If I am busy helping one student, I direct students to help each other. I give immediate results to the students by recording grades into the computer so that they can see how much they have improved their grades. Frequently, I find other work they can improve and do ëwhat if ...í routines with the computer to encourage them to do more make-up work. Their usual response is ëI'll do it!í I do the grading with the students so that they can fix any further mistakes or fix unfinished portions. Also, the work doesn't take too much more extra time since I'm grading and recording during the time. I'd be doing it anyway if the students were not there.î |
